I have been a huge fan of the Mec since I first stepped in the front door.  There are local clubs with people that will help you buy the right kayak for you but the staff at the Mec are not just sales people, they are people that actually like what they do and know Kayaking and Kayaking equipment well.  If you are a member of the Mec you can also call their member services line and if you don't get someone on the line that can help you, they will find someone for you and they'll call you back.  If you are new to kayaking be sure to attend their annual kayaking event for the cheap courses (they were $5 a course at the last session which is close to free).  There are plenty of vendors on-site as well as teachers that know their stuff.
